Assassination of Imam Ali (as)
By Syedda Shahid, Copy Edited By Adam Rizvi, TIO: 19th Day of Ramadan! Imam Ali (as), Islam’s greatest saint, hero, statesman, philosopher who was the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was martyred during Ramadan.

In the year 40th of Hijri, it was in the early hours of the morning of 19th Ramadhan that Imam Ali (as) while leading prayers at dawn inside the mosque in the city of Kufa, Iraq was struck with a poisoned sword on his head by a khawarij named Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam. This khawarij assassin was standing right behind Imam Ali (as) pretending to be following him during prayers but instead he had actually come in to execute the assassination of Imam Ali (as).

P.S: Khawarijites were extremely doctrinated people that set them apart from both mainstream Sunni and Shiʿi Muslims. They were particularly noted for adopting an intolerant and radical approach to their beliefs and practices.
Imam Ali (as) was brave, gentle, and generous, his assassin was caught after the attack but it was Imam Ali (as) himself who fed his assassin with food and water instead of punishing him.
Imam Ali (as) died of his head injury on the 3rd day after being attacked, which was the 21st day of Ramadan.He was buried in the city of Najaf, in present-day Iraq, his shrine is a Majestic
