The India Observer, TIO: The Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) will host the 2024 National Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Unity Summit in Washington D.C. from September 19-20, 2024. Co-hosted by ten other national, local, and global AAPI organizations, the summit will bring together leaders and organizations to collaborate on issues critical to their communities. The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), a founding member of the AAUC, is also a co-host of the event.
On September 19, a delegation of 70 attendees will participate in a White House Briefing to discuss community concerns, followed by a White House tour for 100 summit participants. In the afternoon, representatives from the Department of Justice will engage with attendees, and a youth session will focus on racial bias in schools and cross-cultural identities.
The summit will advocate for key issues including racial discrimination, civil rights, hate crime prevention, immigration, and education on Asian American history. GOPIO has raised the issue of the legal immigration backlog affecting over 1.2 million Indian applicants, which could take up to 100 years to clear under current rules. Two bipartisan bills (HR-6543 and S-3269) that could reduce this wait time will be discussed during the summit.
The event will also feature the launch of a mobile-responsive AAPI Community Hub and a resolution on Alien Land Laws. Several distinguished individuals will be honored, including U.S. Representatives Judy Chu and Andy Kim, and philanthropist Evan Chen. Youth leaders JencyMalena Mesik and Suraj Kulkarni will receive special recognition.
Though registration for the summit is now closed, the event will offer attendees from across the U.S. a valuable opportunity to network with leaders from various multicultural AAPI groups.
