During his address organized by the Indian Overseas Congress-USA, Gandhi took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of driving the Indian car while solely relying on the rear-view mirror and failing to comprehend why the nation is facing setbacks instead of progressing.

In a highly anticipated event at the prestigious Javits Centre in New York, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, took center stage to address a diverse audience. Joining him was seasoned politician Mani Shankar Aiyar, who delivered a thought-provoking discourse on the current political climate in India and outlined potential paths forward. The event also featured an address by Mr. Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Innovation, representing the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs. Chauhan shed light on the pivotal role played by the Mayor’s Office in managing relations with 140 consulates and 70 trade commissions. He extended his gratitude to key figures such as Mohindar Gilzian and George Abraham. Chauhan emphasized the Mayor’s assertion that diversity is the cornerstone of New York City and reiterated the city’s commitment to fostering business and providing unwavering support to the Indian community. This event served as a platform for constructive dialogue on crucial global and political issues.

Gandhi expressed his concerns about the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), asserting that they possess an inherent incapability to envision the future. “Back home we have a problem, and I will tell you the problem. BJP and the RSS are incapable of looking at the future. They’re incapable. Unse aap kuch bhi poocho, woh peeche ki aur dekhte hain [Ask them anything and they will look into the past],” stated the Congress leader.

Although not explicitly referencing the recent train accident in Odisha, Gandhi criticized the BJP’s response to such incidents. He claimed that if asked about a train accident, the BJP would divert attention by mentioning a past action by the Congress party, neglecting to address the current issue at hand. Gandhi further emphasized that during his party’s tenure, they took responsibility for accidents and did not attribute blame to external factors. “No. The Congress Minister, I remember, said it is my responsibility that the train has crashed. I am resigning,” he recalled.

Gandhi’s remarks shed light on his concerns regarding the BJP-led government’s approach to governance and their apparent lack of foresight. As he concluded his visit to the United States, the Congress leader left the Indian diaspora with thought-provoking insights into the political landscape back home.

Gandhi pointed out that when confronted with questions regarding current issues, the BJP tends to deflect by referencing past actions of the Congress party, showcasing their inclination to dwell in the past.

“Their immediate response is to look back,” Gandhi stated, citing the example of the BJP’s response to the removal of the periodic table from textbooks. He highlighted that this phenomenon extends to Narendra Modi, metaphorically describing him as a driver who solely relies on the rear-view mirror while attempting to navigate the Indian car. Gandhi expressed his concern over Modi’s failure to comprehend why the nation is facing obstacles instead of making progress. This trend, he noted, is not limited to Modi alone but also pervades the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Gandhi emphasized that India is currently engaged in an ideological battle, with one side drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi while the other is represented by Nathuram Godse. He praised Mahatma Gandhi’s forward-looking, modern, and open-minded approach, contrasting it with Godse’s focus on the past. Gandhi characterized Godse as angry, hateful, and fearful, noting his inability to confront the challenges of the present.

The Congress leader also highlighted the contributions of prominent Indian leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who were non-resident Indians (NRIs) leading the freedom movement. Gandhi affirmed that the Congress party embodies the values for which these stalwarts fought.

He stressed that the Constitution and democracy are essential for modern India’s existence and called for their protection.
